The sampler is a weight in a fluoroplastic shell with holes for water into which the sampling bottle is screwed through the adapter ring. The placement of the weight above the bottle allows sampling in shallower water bodies than would be possible with a traditional sampler design, and also makes it easier to replace bottles.
