The fundamental difference between these devices and flatbed scanners is that the photodetector array moves in the focal plane of the lens, and not together with the lens, as in flatbed scanners. The second fundamental feature of projection scanners is that the distance between the lens and the scanned object can be arbitrarily changed, therefore the resolution of such scanners is determined not in dots per inch of the image, but in dots of the entire image. The image of a small and large object will have the same number of dots, and accordingly, for a small object the resolution in dots per inch will be very large, and for an object located at infinity it will be very small. The main advantage of scanners of this type is the ability to scan not only documents on individual sheets of paper, but also thick hard-bound books and tightly bound documentation. In addition, it is possible to scan other objects, including three-dimensional ones, depending on the depth of field settings of the optical system. Projection scanners do not come into contact with the surface being scanned, so they are well suited for digitizing old documents that might be damaged during normal scanning.
